Pixelity, a game development studio from Korea, has unveiled plans to bring an XR game to life, drawing inspiration from the iconic 1990s anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion. The studio’s announcement reveals they’ve struck an official licensing deal with Studio Khara in Japan, paving the way for this ambitious project. The game is set to launch in three parts, each weaving through the narrative of all 26 episodes of the beloved anime series. The first chapter is already in the works, with a release aimed for 2026.
For those deeply ingrained in the world of Evangelion, the significance of this announcement will come as no surprise. Back in the 1990s, the anime took the world by storm, rejuvenating the anime scene in Japan and becoming a cultural touchstone that continues to echo through countless anime that followed.
Set in the year 2015—a futuristic leap from its original air date in 1995—the story centers around Shinji Ikari. Chosen to pilot the Evangelion, a massive humanoid combat weapon, Shinji becomes humanity’s last hope against enigmatic creatures known as Angels who threaten Tokyo-3.
As of now, Pixelity hasn’t specified the platforms for this upcoming game. However, they promise an immersive XR experience that invites players to explore various locations, staying true to the original timeline and events of the anime. Gamers will undertake missions, engaging in thrilling battles as they journey through this world.
"The game will include collaborative play elements where players interact with well-known figures from Evangelion," the studio shared. "We believe this will resonate deeply with longtime fans. Our goal is to craft a dynamic experience that mirrors the essence of well-loved action-adventure games."
Pixelity, founded in 2017, has a growing portfolio of VR games under its belt, such as Puttzzle (2023), Crazyworld VR (2022), and Rise of the Fallen (2018). They are also busy developing other VR titles, including The Patcher and Teahouse of Souls.
Although the world of Evangelion has previously ventured into VR, this marks the series’ first official at-home gaming adaptation. Back in 2017, Bandai Namco’s VR studio, ‘Project i Can’, launched the multi-player experience Evangelion VR: The Throne of Souls at VR ZONE in Shinjuku, Japan, but it was only available for a brief spell. Now, devotees of the series can look forward to a new chapter in the comfort of their own space.
