Okay, so here’s the lowdown. HP, last year, was like, “Hey, we’re doing this cool Google Beam thing!” It used to be called Project Starline, but names change, right? Now, they’ve got this thing called ‘Dimension.’ It’s all super corporate-y, priced at a whopping 25k. Yep, that’s each. Oof.
So, this tech mojo with Beam uses six cameras. Yep, six! Plus, some “state of the art AI” (fancy, huh?) to conjure up some crazy realistic 3D video of anyone in the chat. Imagine a 65-inch display stretching its neck to make all the realistic sizes and eye contact—it’s almost creepy. Like those 3D movies but, well, work-themed.
The catch? It’s gonna come out for some special partners in late 2025. And that 25k doesn’t even get you the Google Beam license—that’s extra. Sneaky, HP.
Anyway, they’re pushing this thing for businesses. Zoom Rooms, Google Meet—you name it. 3D chats and boring old 2D ones, too. Toss in some Teams and Webex vibes for good measure.
Helen Sheirbon, HP’s top brass in Hybrid Systems (I think that’s her title?), was all about this “authentic human connections” spiel. She’s convinced HP Dimension is the next big thing, merging the virtual and real deal like some sci-fi fantasy. A modern-day communicator, they say.
Oh, quick flashback. Back in 2021, Google Beam—known then as Project Starlight—was unveiled. The idea? Nix the headset and glasses; it’s all natural 3D depth just using a screen. FaceTime, but magic!
HP ran some tests and, surprise, 39% of folks caught more non-verbal nods, 37% thought turn-taking improved, and 28% got better at remembering stuff. Basically, it’s a conferencing charm. Or so they claim.
