So, here’s the deal. Nintendo’s big boss, Shuntaro Furukawa, dropped an “oops, we did it again” about the new Switch 2’s availability. I mean, the thing’s selling out faster than… well, something really fast. You get me. Feels like everyone wants one, and — surprise, surprise — they’re hard to find. Who knew?
At some sort of important-sounding meeting, Furukawa’s like, “Yeah, we know you can’t get your hands on it and, yup, that’s kind of our bad.” I guess they tried this whole lottery thing in Japan, hoping to be fair-ish — you throw your name in the hat if you’ve got a cool My Nintendo Store account. Out of nowhere, millions jump in, way more than they were ready for. Like, over 2.2 million people kind of swamped them, and of course, Furukawa felt a little sorry about raising hopes.
Four rounds of this raffle nonsense later, and people still can’t score a Switch 2. So, they go, “Hey, how about a fifth drawing?” Seriously, who wants to feel like you’re in a game just buying a gaming console? Maybe I’m overthinking it, but it’s bananas.
I heard — yes, I’m getting sidetracked — that a lot of shops did the same lottery trick but started selling them straight off the shelf again over the weekend. So, I guess that’s a win?
Furukawa says they’re turbocharging the production, like, turning the whole thing up to eleven, to get more systems out there. Fingers crossed.
The Switch 2 didn’t just waltz in alone, by the way. Mario Kart World’s along for the ride, plus a whole load of other games like Donkey Kong Bananza and Super Mario Party Jamboree. It’s trickling out, bit by bit. And yeah, they’ve got big plans rolling out through next year, like Metroid Prime 4 Beyond set way off in 2025. Feels a bit like waiting for Christmas in July, doesn’t it?
Price-wise, if you’re in the UK, you’re coughing up £395.99. Europeans are dropping €469.99, and in the States, it’s a neat $449.99. BTW, these are not random numbers I just made up. Checked it.
And somewhere out there is this awesome launch trailer — haven’t seen it, though I’m imagining all the epic close-ups and dramatic music you usually get.
Anyway, gotta dash. If you manage to snag one of these elusive machines, color me impressed. 🎮
