Whoa, so like, popping open my email this morning, I saw this thing about Cyberpunk 2077? Yeah, it’s getting a sequel! CD Projekt (you know, the folks behind the game) just spilled the beans. Cyberpunk 2, yep, that’s what they’re calling it now, has jumped into pre-production. No more of that Project Orion code name stuff.
I swear, they made this big announcement during some financial meeting thing. You know, those boring slides with numbers? But hey, good for them, right? They’re even giving kudos to the team ’cause they hit this big step. Meanwhile, they’re also working on getting the first game on this…what did they call it? Nintendo Switch 2 or something.
Anyway, CD Projekt Red (we’ll just call them CDPR, yeah?) said their crew wrapped up the early brainstorming bit a few weeks ago. Now, they’re rolling up their sleeves for the real work. I dunno, maybe I’m overthinking, but I’d kinda like to know how those brainstorming sessions even go. Like, do they just sit around dreaming of crazy futures, or is it all spreadsheets and coffee?
Peeking at their deets from April, apparently, 96 folks are on this Cyberpunk 2 gig – compared to 84 in February. Not too shabby. Still, a drop in the ocean with Witcher 4 hogging over 400 devs. And I’ve gotta mention those 131 poor souls in shared services, doing the unglamorous stuff like QA and localization for all their projects.
And oh man, get this – they’ve already sold 10 million copies of the Phantom Liberty expansion. Meanwhile, Witcher 3 hits its 10-year mark with 60 million copies sold. That’s like…a lot of monster bashing and wandering around Dogtown, right?
What tickles my brain is if they’ll stick with the name Cyberpunk 2, or maybe lean towards something like Cyberpunk 2100? I’m just throwing out ideas. Rumor has it, thanks to Mike Pondsmith’s insights, we might be seeing a city that’s all dystopian-Chicago-vibes. Interesting times ahead, I’d say.
