Okay, so here’s the deal. We’re like, a week away from the Nintendo Switch 2 launch. I know, everyone’s buzzing, but Nintendo? They’re like feeding us snippets of info instead of just spilling the beans. Anyway, I stumbled across this tidbit on the Nintendo Today app Tuesday, or maybe it was Wednesday—time’s been slippery. Anyway, they’re jazzing up the whole Nintendo Switch Online shebang with some, let’s say, throwback vibes for the N64 games.
First, get this—you can rewind your gameplay. Yeah, it’s like when you totally mess up a jump in some platformer or find yourself yeeted off the track in Mario Kart 64 (I mean, join the club, right?). So, yeah, that’s gonna be a lifesaver. Or maybe not, depends on if you’re better than me at driving, ha.
And then, there’s this thing, the CRT filter. Or, as I like to call it, the “let’s time travel to 1998” mode. Turns out, you can throw some scan-lines on those N64 games, which somehow makes them look, um, beautifully worse? Like, Ocarina of Time is now suddenly a pixelated masterpiece all over again. Why do we love making things look worse on purpose? Nostalgia’s a weird, lovely thing, I guess.
So, this jazz, it’s mainly for the Switch 2, not to rub salt in the OG Switch owners’ wounds. But don’t fret—both consoles (OG Switch and new kid on the block) are getting this cool feature where you can remap controls for N64 games. Imagine fiddling with Joy-Cons and even the old Nintendo 64 controller. My hands are already confused just thinking about it.
