Okay, so here’s the thing. Yakuza series, coming to Switch again — like it’s a trend or something. The Wii U had its moment with it, like a rare one, and then the Switch gets Yakuza Kiwami, which was a whole mood. Now, Yakuza 0 is about to crash the party for Nintendo Switch 2’s debut. What’s up with that? I had some time to mess around with it, trying to see what’s what.
So, Yakuza 0, yeah? Celebrating a whole decade since it dropped in Japan. PlayStation 3 and 4 first got it—like a double whammy. But now, there’s this director’s cut label slapped on it for Switch 2. Pretty cheeky considering the original crew from SEGA isn’t even around. But hey, what do I know? They’ve thrown in English voices, some fresh cutscenes, and this thing called Red Light Raid.
After about 45 minutes of the docked version… It’s smooth as butter on Switch 2. Got some footage, and it looks like it purrs at 60 frames per sec. Can’t swear on it being native 4K, probably runs at 1440p-ish? HDR fans, prepare to be bummed. It’s not there. Asked SEGA directly. Nada.
Now, if you’re new to Yakuza, 0 is your go-to. It’s got drama, laughs, the works. Karaoke sessions, old-school SEGA games, battin’ cages, everything. The beat-’em-up play is tons of fun, with a mix of fighting styles to boot. Exploring 80s Japan? Yes, please. Been through it on PS4, and honestly, can’t wait to do it all over again.
Red Light Raid mode though? Ehh. Combat’s not my strong suit and this is basically a survival mode. Think waves of baddies and the occasional big boss. Got to dabble with it solo, could bring in some AI buds too. But you can also rope in real-life friends, locally or online. Loads of characters to pick from, many just familiar faces from the side stories. Hopped into it with this Ginger Chapman guy—like if Chucky went human. His knife game is strong but kinda one-note.
Kazuma Kiryu also makes an appearance. Though unlike story mode where you swap between four styles, in Raid mode, you’re stuck with one. You earn cash as you play, leveling up and possibly unlocking more characters. Going solo’s a quick thrill, but it’s probably more of a ride with a crew.
Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut on Switch 2? Heck yeah, part of my must-try list when it drops. Even though I’ve been down this road before, I’m really curious about how the English dub feels. Still not completely convinced on the Raid mode, but hey, it’s worth another crack when the game launches next month.
